Harrison Memorial Arch

The Harrison Memorial Arch forms a grand entrance to Observatory Road and Blackford Hill, 2 miles (3 km) south of the centre of Edinburgh. Designed by architect Sydney Mitchell (1856 - 1930) and constructed in red Dumfriesshire sandstone, the arch served "to commemorate the work and character" of Sir George Harrison (1811-85), Lord Provost and briefly Member of Parliament for Edinburgh South. Harrison had facilitated the purchase of Blackford Hill for the people of Edinburgh in 1884. The archway was Category B-listed in 1993.
