David Stirling Memorial

(SAS Memorial)

A dramatic roadside monument located close to the summit of the Hill of Row in Stirling Council Area, the David Stirling Memorial was erected in 2002 to commemorate the achievements of Lieut-Colonel Sir David Stirling (1915-90), who founded the Special Air Service (SAS) and was born at Keir House, 1½ miles (2.5 km) to the southeast. Depicting Stirling standing confidently on the central a group of rocks, binoculars in hand, the monument is surrounded by a circular low dry-stone wall. A plaque is inscribed "In remembrance of all those members of the Special Air Service Regiment who have died in the service of their country and have given their lives to uphold the principles of freedom and justice". Nearby the names of members of the SAS Regiment who have died in service are recorded on a granite slab.
