Donan, Eilean
A rocky islet at the mouth of Loch Duich in Wester Ross, Highland Council Area, Eilean Donan is the site of the picturesque castle of the Clan Macrae which dates from the 13th century. Garrisoned by Spanish Jacobite troops in the abortive rebellion of 1719, Eilean Donan Castle was blown up by an English man o' war but later restored. It incorporates a memorial to the Clan Macrae who held it as hereditary Constables on behalf of the Mackenzies of Kintail. The islet is joined to the mainland by a causeway.
