Occupying a picturesque location 2 miles (3 km) north of Perth, within the Scone Palace estate and on the left bank of the River Tay, Scone Park is the racecourse for Perth, which lies opposite across the river.
Scone Park is the United Kingdom's most northerly racecourse. Horse racing most likely began in 1613 on the Inch, an area of flat land lying alongside the river some 2 miles (3 km) to the south. There it remained for almost three hundred years. In 1908, Scone Park was first used but racing was originally confined to just two days each September. Today, there are eleven racing days between April and September, including the City of Perth Gold Cup, which is a 3 mile (5 km) steeple-chase first run in 2000 and now held annually in the middle of June.
