The settlements between the River Devon and the foot of the steep south-facing slopes of the Ochil Hills from Blairlogie to Yetts o' Muckhart, including Menstrie, Alva, Tillicoultry, Dollar and Pool o' Muckhart, have come to be known as the 'Hillfoot Villages'. Many owe their development to 18th and 19th Century textile mills driven by water power derived from fast flowing streams that drop down from the hills to the Valley of the River Devon.
