Old Man of Storr, Skye

The most impressive of the pinnacles of The Storr (Norse big), the highest point on the Trotternish escarpment to the north of Portree on the island of Skye, the Old Man of Storr forms part of a spectacular landslide feature that is one of the most extensive in Britain. It is 49m (160 feet) high and was probably a landmark for Viking seafarers. One of the most difficult rock-climbs in Britain, it was only in 1955, two years after Mount Everest, that this rock pinnacle was first conquered. This distinctive landmark appears as a location in a number of films including Bonnie Prince Charlie (1948), The Land that Time Forgot (1975), Year of the Comet (1992) and Prometheus (2012).
