Giant Angus MacAskill Museum, The
A small museum, located in a restored thatched smithy in Dunvegan (Isle of Skye), the Giant Angus MacAskill Museum commemorates Angus Mor MacAskill (1825-63), who at 2.36m (7 feet 9 inches), was the tallest ever Scotsman. Founded and run by a remote descendant and local character, Peter MacAskill, the museum opened in 1989 and includes information and a range of memorabilia relating to the 'Cape Breton Giant', who was described by the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest true giant; this is non-pathological, where his giantism is not caused by deformity or disease. Descriptive panels relate the story of his birth on Berneray (Western Isles) and his life in Canada. Visitors can see a life-size model of MacAskill, together with a replica of his immense bed.
