Storr Lochs Hydro-Electric Power Scheme

A small hydro-electric power scheme on the east coast of the Trotternish peninsula in the Isle of Skye, 3 miles (5 km) north of Portree, the Storr Lochs comprise Lochs Fada and Leathan, with a dam at the northern end. The scheme has a generation capacity of 2.4 megawatts making use of a gross head of water of 136m (446 feet), which falls over steep cliffs on the east coast of the peninsula having produced an average of 8 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year through the power station above. Built in 1952 to supply electricity to the isolated island community, the scheme is now an integral part of the national electricity supply network.
