John Lyon

(2nd Earl of Kinghorne)

1596 - 1646

Noble. Lyon was born into one of the wealthiest families in Scotland and succeeded his father as Earl of Kinghorne in 1615. However, he spent much of the family wealth financing the Covenanting Army. Lyon was a friend of James Graham, the Marquis of Montrose (1612-50), who helped frame the National Covenant in 1638. However, when Graham turned against the Covenanters, preferring to support King Charles I, Lyon continued to support the Covenanting army against Graham and bankrupted himself in the process. Lyon married twice; first in 1618 to Margaret Erskine, daughter of the Earl of Mar and later to Elizabeth Maule, daughter of the 1st Earl of Panmure.
