Sir Thomas Maule

1521 - 1600

Nobleman and soldier. Educated in Edinburgh, Maule became an attendant of Cardinal Beaton (1494 - 1548) and accompanied him when he was appointed Ambassador to France (1541). Maule fought at the Battle of Hadden Rigg (Northumberland) in 1542, where he was captured by the English, although he was released after the death of King James V (1512-42). He also fought at the Battle of Pinkie (1547) where he managed to escape although fourteen of his supporters, including his cousin Thomas, were killed. Shortly after, he was taken prisoner when the Earl of Somerset's English army burned Panmure House and he was held at Broughty Ferry Castle.

Maule married twice; first to Elizabeth, the daughter of David Lindsay, Earl of Crawford, but the couple had no children. After her death he married Margaret, the widow of John Ogilvy of Balfour and daughter of Sir George Halliburton of Pitcur. Margaret was famed for her piety, kindness and charity. They had seven sons and two daughters. His grandson, Patrick (1585 - 1661), was created the 1st Earl Panmure in 1646.
