John Stuart McCaig

1824 - 1902

Oban banker, art critic and philosophical essayist. McCaig is remembered through his tower, built on the hillside above Oban. His death brought an end to the construction of what was to have been an enclosed building and the walls remain as a dramatic folly. It is said his heirs were more enthusiastic for his money than his memorial!
