Gaelic rock musician. Born in Uig (Skye), Munro was brought up in Portree where he attended the High School, before studying at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. He joined the Gaelic folk-rock band Runrig in 1974 as their new lead singer. Munro completed his education with a teaching qualification from Moray House College in Edinburgh. He taught art at Inverness Academy, Leith Academy and Tynecastle High School (Edinburgh) before Runrig became a full-time occupation in the early 1980s.
His strong political views led Munro to leave Runrig and stand as a Labour Party candidate for the new Scottish Parliament, although he failed to be elected in 1997. He went on to a solo career and released On the West Side in 1999.
Munro has served as Rector of both the University of Edinburgh and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI). He has also worked as Development Director for the Gaelic-language college Sabhal Mor Ostaig on Skye.
