James Gregory

1638 - 1675

Mathematician and inventor. Born in Drumoak (Aberdeenshire), he was educated at the University of Aberdeen. Gregory invented of the reflecting telescope, known as the Gregorian Telescope, which was developed three years later by the Englishman Sir Isaac Newton.

Appointed to a Chair in St Andrews University (1668), Gregory became the first Professor of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh in 1674. He died in Edinburgh.
