Sir John Murray of Broughton

1715 - 1777

Advisor and confidant to Bonnie Prince Charlie. Born in Broughton in the Scottish Borders, Murray was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He travelled regularly to Rome to make plans with Charles Stuart before the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, and met him when he arrived in Scotland, organising the administration of the Jacobite army. Following Culloden he was arrested and betrayed the cause, contributing to the evidence against Simon Fraser (Lord Lovat). As his payment, he retained his estates and received a pension from the Government.
