Saint Finan

(St. Finan or St. Finnan)

? - 661

Church leader. Born in Ireland, Finan trained as a monk at the foundation of St. Columba on the island of Iona. He succeeded Saint Aidan as Bishop of Lindisfarne and leader of the Northumbrian church. He was a supporter of Celtic liturgical practices against the suggestion they should be replaced by those from Rome. He created a foundation in honour of St. Mary on Tyneside and an abbey at Whitby. He converted two Saxon kings and sent missionaries to the south of England.

His feast day is the 9th February.
