Sir John Vanbrugh

1664 - 1726

Architect and playwright. Born in London, of Flemish descent, although his family fled the city in 1665 to avoid the plague. His connection with Scotland is restricted to architectural works including Floors Castle near Kelso, and he is said to have provided the inspiration for Inveraray Castle. His most significant commissions were Castle Howard and the Blenheim Palace in England.
