Sir Andrew Gray
(1st Lord Gray)

c.1390 - 1469

Diplomat and noble. Gray was held in London as a hostage for the unpaid ransom demanded for the release of King James I (1394 - 1437). He became a leading figure in James' court, followed by the courts of James II (1430-60) and James III (1452-88). He served as Scottish Ambassador to both England and France and was raised to the peerage around 1445.

Gray was associated with estates at Broxmouth (East Lothian) and Fowlis (Angus). He was responsible for building Castle Huntly in 1452 to replace Fowlis Castle which had become too small for his burgeoning family.
