Mungo Park

1835 - 1904

Golfing champion. Born in Musselburgh, one of five sons, Park was the brother of Willie Park Senior (1834 - 1903) and David Park. He began golfing at a young age but abandoned the game to go to sea. Returning home in the early 1870s he quickly regained his golfing skills and won the Open Championship at Musselburgh in 1874. He was well-placed in four further Open Championships between 1875 and 1881. He went on to make his career in club-making and as a club professional, coaching others in the game. He died in the poorhouse at Inveresk.
