Thomas Boston

1676 - 1732

Theologist. Born in Duns (Scottish Borders), the son of a Covenanter, Boston studied Greek and theology at the University of Edinburgh. He was ordained in 1697 and became the Minister at Simprim (1699). While here, he was influenced by an English text The Marrow of Modern Divinity, which was later to bring him into conflict with the Church authorities. He moved to the parish of Ettrick in 1707, remaining there until his death. He is noted for his work Human Nature in its Fourfold State which explains Calvinist theology.

He lies buried in Ettrick kirkyard.
