W.I. Douglas Elliot

1923 - 2005

Rugby player. Born in Stow, Elliot was a farmer who played rugby for Edinburgh Academicals. He won his first Scottish cap in 1947, in a match against France, and played internationally 29 on 29 occasions, seven as Scottish Captain. Although he was selected, Douglas never played for the British Lions because of his farming commitments. His most memorable performance was the sensational win 19-0 over Wales in 1951, although he was also praised as an inspirational captain of the team which narrowly lost 3-0 to the New Zealand All Blacks at Murrayfield in 1954. He retired in the same year.

Noted for his size and strength, and recognised as the outstanding rugby player of the post-war era, Elliot was inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
