Andrew Foulis

1712 - 1775

Printer and publisher. Born in Glasgow, younger brother of Robert Foulis (1707-76). He joined his brother in a successful partnership, the Foulis Press, which served as printer for the University of Glasgow. The company gained a reputation for the quality of their work. The brothers founded an Academy of Art in Glasgow (1753), where printing, painting and sculpture were taught and several important artists of the time were trained, including David Allan (1744-96) and William Cochran (1738-85). However, the initiative suffered financial problems on Andrew's death and was forced to close.
