Political journalist. Born in Bellshill (North Lanarkshire), Campbell was brought up in Birmingham (England). He served in the Royal Navy during the latter stages of World War II but thereafter turned to a career in journalism. By the early 1950s he was a correspondent for the Scottish Daily Express and spent the next 50 years reporting the work of the Westminster parliament. Both his colleagues, and the politicians he reported on, held him in great respect.
