Prof. Henry Drummond

1851 - 1897

Clergyman, academic and author. Born in Stirling, Drummond was educated at the University of Edinburgh. He was ordained a Minister in the Free Church of Scotland and was appointed a natural science lecturer at the Free Church College in Glasgow (1877), rising to become a Professor in 1884. He tried to reconcile science and religion in his book Natural Law in the Spiritual World (1883), which made him famous by establishing common ground between scientists and theologians. He travelled to Central Africa, North America, Australia and Japan. A further book, Tropical Africa (1888), came as a result of these travels and The Ascent of Man, which examines Darwinism in a Christian context was based on the Lowell Lectures he gave in Boston in 1893.
