Sir John Foulis

1638 - 1707

Lawyer and social historian. Foulis was born into a notable Edinburgh family of merchants and lawyers. He rose to become Keeper of the Register of Sasines in Edinburgh and lived at Foulis House in the Ravelston district of the city. Foulis kept detailed records of his golf on Leith Links and at Musselburgh, together with his attendance at horse-races on Leith Sands. His 'account book' was published by the Scottish History Society in 1894 and provides a fascinating insight into the social history of the late 17th century.
