Union General in the American Civil War. Born in Erskine (Renfrewshire), McArthur served time with his father as a blacksmith before emigrating to the US at the age of 23. He settled in Chicago and became a manager in an iron works there.
At the start of the Civil War, he was appointed Captain of the Chicago Highland Guards. By May 1861 he held the rank of Colonel and was promoted to Brigadier General in March the following year. He led his men at Fort Donelson and at Shiloh, where he was wounded. He was also involved in the actions at Vicksburg, Nashville and Fort Blakely.
He died in Chicago.
