Rev. William Brown

1766 - 1835

Clergyman and author. Born in Peebles, Brown was ordained as a minister in 1792 and went on to serve the parish of Eskdalemuir for more than 43 years. He is notable for his two-volume Antiquities of the Jews Carefully Compiled from Authentic Sources and their Customs Illustrated from Modern Travels (1820, with a second edition in 1826).

He died in the manse at Eskdalemuir and is buried in the kirkyard there, his grave marked by a particularly gushing memorial erected by his grateful parishioners.
