King Robert III

c.1340 - 1406

Scottish monarch. Eldest son of King Robert II (1316-90), and grand-son of Robert the Bruce (1274 - 1329). He was crippled following a riding accident (1388). Robert succeeded his father to the throne in 1390 (at Scone), but was considered a feeble monarch, resulting in his ambitious brother, the Duke of Albany, running state affairs. Albany imprisoned Robert's eldest son, the Duke of Rothesay, at Falkland, where he starved to death. Robert sent his younger son, who would become King James I (1394 - 1437) to safety in France, but the news that James had been captured by the English killed Robert. He died at Rothesay Castle (or perhaps Dundonald Castle, South Ayrshire) and is buried at Paisley Abbey.
