Pen Hadow

1962 -

Polar explorer. Born in Perth, Hadow was brought up in the manse in Glen Devon. He was educated at Harrow, where he was Head of School and noted for his sporting prowess, and then read Geography at University College London. Following his first expedition to the Arctic in 1989, he has gone on to become the first person to walk to the North and South Poles without outside assistance. His 478-mile (770-km) journey alone to the North Pole took 64 days between 17th March and 19th May 2003, described in his book Solo (2004) and a television documentary. In 2004, Hadow journeyed across the Antarctic continent, again without re-supply, but guiding a 63 year-old businessman who became the oldest man to reach the pole.
