Charles Hope
(Lord Granton)

1763 - 1851

Jurist and politician. The grandson of another Charles, 1st Earl of Hopetoun (1681 - 1742), Hope read law at the University of Edinburgh. He was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1784 and appointed Sheriff of Orkney in 1792. He served as Lord Advocate (1801-04) and as Member of Parliament for Edinburgh (1803-05). He was appointed a judge, taking the title Lord Granton, and went on to serve as Lord Justice Clerk (1804-11). Hope served as Lord President of Court of Session (1811-41) and was appointed to Privy Council in 1822.

In 1793, he married his cousin Charlotte Hope, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, at Dirleton, and his eldest son was Rear-Admiral Charles Hope (1798 -1854).
