General James Murray

1721 - 1794

First Governor of Canada. Born at Ballencrieff House, near Aberlady in East Lothian. He served with the British Army in Canada at the Siege of Louisburg (1758) and in the battle on the Plains of Abraham. He was made Military Governor of Quebec, resisting the French and became the first British Governor-General of Canada. He was accused of betraying British interests when he tried to protect the French Canadians, and was recalled to Britain to face charges. He was vindicated, although never returned to Canada.
