Rev. Alexander (Alex) Muir

1940 - 2010

Musician and clergyman. Raised in Glasgow, Muir attended Rutherglen Academy and the University of Glasgow, graduating in Scottish History and Literature. He trained as a teacher at Jordanhill College, teaching until 1977 when he returned to the University of Glasgow to study for the ministry. He served the Parish of Canisbay with Keiss from 1982, regularly preaching for Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900 - 2002), while she was on holiday at the Castle of Mey. He went on to serve at Carinish in North Uist (1991-96), retiring to Inverness.

Muir is best known for the psalm tune The Bays of Harris, composed in 1986, which gained recognition when it became a charity hit on the bagpipes for the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He composed other tunes and also wrote on church history.
