Thomas (Tommy) McQuater

1914 - 2008

Big-band trumpeter. Born in Maybole (South Ayrshire), McQuater was largely self-taught. He played with a band on transatlantic liners in the early 1930s, but is perhaps best known as a member of the Squadronaires during World War II. In the 1950s and 60s, he worked on radio and television, making recordings with the likes of George Chisholm, Johnny Dankworth and Benny Goodman. He died in London.
