Terence (Terry) Nutkins

1946 - 2012

Naturalist and broadcaster. Born in London, Nutkins helped out in London Zoo from an early age but, at the age of eleven, went to work with author Gavin Maxwell (1914-69) and his otters in Sandaig in the West Highlands. Maxwell became his guardian. During this time Nutkins lost two fingers following an otter bite, although he showed no animosity to the otter involved or to Maxwell. He worked on the children's television wildlife show Animal Magic from the late 1970s and was a presenter of The Really Wild Show from its launch in 1986, both for the BBC. He also appeared on My Life As an Animal (2009) and Winterwatch (2012). He died at his home in Glenelg, having suffered from leukaemia.
