Andrew Barclay

1814 - 1900

Engineer. Born in Dalry (North Ayrshire) and working in Kilmarnock (East Ayrshire), Barclay began designing telescopes but became a leading builder of railway locomotives. He pioneered a safety locomotive which did not produce sparks and therefore could be used in areas where fire was a risk. Barclay died in Kilmarnock. One of his engines is preserved at the Scottish Industrial Railway Centre at Dalmellington (East Ayrshire).
