Covenanter. Veitch was born in Roberton (South Lanarkshire) and educated at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1659. He fled to Newcastle following the Battle of Rullion Green (1666) but was eventually arrested and imprisoned on the Bass Rock (1679-80). He helped Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll (1629-85), escape from Scotland in 1681 and joined him in the Netherlands in 1683. He returned first to England and then to Scotland, where he became Minister in Peebles in 1690 and was installed as Minister of St. Michael's Church in Dumfries in 1694, serving until 1715. His wife Marion, an Edinburgh lady, died the day before he did in 1722. Their son was a Captain who went to Central America as part of the Darien Scheme. Veitch's gravestone in St. Michael's kirkyard had become illegible over the years and was replaced in 2001 by the Scottish Covenanter Memorials Association.
