John Erskine

(2nd Earl of Mar)

1558 - 1634

Powerful noble. Son of the 1st Earl who had been Regent of Scotland, Erskine was a close associate of James Douglas (1516 - 1581), who was the last of King James VI regents. He fell out of favour after the rise of Esmé Stuart (1542 - 1583) and James Stuart (Earl of Arran) and was banished to England.

He later negotiated James' accession to the English thrown, on the death of Elizabeth I, and was returned to senior office.
