William Neilson


1810 - 1882

Industrialist. Born into a family of iron-masters, he was the son of John Neilson (1779 - 1855) and nephew of James Beaumont Neilson (1792 - 1865) who had invented the hot-blast furnace. Neilson established the Mossend Iron Works in 1839 and two of his sons, Walter and Hugh Neilson, went on to build the Clydebridge Steelworks in 1877.
