William Baxter

1767 - 1854

Textile manufacturer. Born in Dundee, Baxter leased a flax spinning mill at Glamis in 1818 and, in 1822, built his first mill on the Dens Burn in Dundee, with his eldest son Edward (1791- 1870). This company became Baxter Brothers, which operated the Lower and Upper Dens Mills in the city, and grew to become the world's largest linen sail-cloth and canvas manufacturer, and later significant jute spinners. Baxter lived at Ellangowan House in Dundee and Balgavies House in Angus.
