James Thom
(The Ayrshire Sculptor)

1802 - 1850

Sculptor, who lived in Ayr. He was apprenticed as a mason, but went on to produce a bust of Robert Burns (1759-96), which was well sculpted, despite being a poor likeness. He also sculpted Burns' character Tam O'Shanter. His bread-and-butter work was the carving of gravestones.
