Seaman and castaway. Born in the fishing village of Lower Largo in Fife. Selkirk was the model for Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" (published 1719), having lived for more than four years on an uninhabited island in the Juan Fernandez island group (1704-9). These islands, lying W of Chile in the S. Pacific, today include the Isla Alejandro Selkirk and the Isla Robinson Crusoe.
