Sir William George Gillies 1898 - 1973 Artist. Born in Haddington, he lived in Temple (Midlothian) for most of his life. Gillies was a prolific painter of both landscapes and still-life in oil and watercolour. He was a friend and contemporary of William Johnstone (1897 - 1981). He became Principal of the Edinburgh College of Art (1959), where he himself studied, and was knighted (1970).
