Sir William George Gillies

1898 - 1973

Artist. Born in Haddington, he lived in Temple (Midlothian) for most of his life. Gillies was a prolific painter of both landscapes and still-life in oil and watercolour. He was a friend and contemporary of William Johnstone (1897 - 1981). He became Principal of the Edinburgh College of Art (1959), where he himself studied, and was knighted (1970). Several of his works were part of the Hope Scott gift to the Talbot Rice Gallery in the University of Edinburgh.
