Sir Nicholas Fairbairn

1933 - 1995

Flamboyant politician. Fairbairn was educated at Loretto School and trained as a lawyer at the University of Edinburgh. He was called to the Bar and went on to serve as a Queen's Counsel. Fairbairn succeeded Sir Alec Douglas-Home as Conservative Member of Parliament for Kinross and West Perthshire in 1974, and following boundary changes was re-elected for the new seat of Perth and Kinross in 1983. In 1979, he was appointed Solicitor-General for Scotland, the second most senior law officer. He was knighted in 1988.

Fairbairn was also a noted artist, writer and raconteur. His death triggered a by-election which took his seat into the hands of the Scottish National Party.
