Barbara Dickson


1948 -

Singer. Born in Dunfermline, Dickson was the daughter of the cook on a tugboat at Rosyth Naval Dockyard. She worked for the civil service in Edinburgh, singing on an amateur basis in the evenings. However, it was not long before she turned professional, and her first hit Answer Me came in 1976. Other hits include Another Suitcase in Another Hall and January, February. She has taken starring roles in various musicals and has moved into television drama with roles in Band of Gold and Taggart.

Barbara Dickson was awarded an OBE in the 2002 New Year Honours List and one of the first honorary degrees from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2012.
