Sir Michael Bruce Forsyth

(Baron Forsyth of Drumlean)

1954 -

Politician. Born in Montrose and educated in Arbroath and at the University of St. Andrews, where he became involved in student politics. He began his career as a member of Westminster City Council (1978-83) but went on to serve as Conservative Member of Parliament for Stirling from 1983. He was quickly promoted to become a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary (1986-7) and as a Minister in the Scottish Office (1987-92). Following brief spells in the Department of the Environment and the Home Office, Forsyth served as Secretary of State for Scotland between 1995 and 1997. He spectacularly lost his seat in the landslide that brought the Labour Party to power in 1997.

He was knighted in 1997 and created a Life Peer in 1999, taking the name Lord Forsyth of Drumlean, a location to the west of his home in Aberfoyle.
