Missionary and explorer. Born at Ormiston (East Lothian), Moffat was a missionary in South Africa for 54 years. In 1841, he was joined by David Livingstone, who subsequently married his daughter. Moffat translated the Bible and Pilgrim's Progress into the Sechuana language.
