Lawyer and Politician. Born into an Edinburgh legal family, he had supported William of Orange against King James VII (1633 - 1701) and was rewarded with the Earldom of Rosebery. He became a Commissioner of the Act of Union (1707) and was Lord Clerk Register of Scotland. He bought the Barony of Barnbougle, along with its Castle, from the Earl of Haddington (Hamilton) and developed the Dalmeny Estate.
