Tobias George Smollett

1721 - 1771

Author. Born on a farm at Dalquhurn near Renton (West Dunbartonshire). Smollett was schooled at Dumbarton and pursued a medical education at the University of Glasgow. Following a spell as a naval surgeon, he settled in London where he became a successful novelist. His works include Roderick Random (1748), Peregrine Pickle (1751) and Humphrey Clinker (1771). He also wrote a History of England (1758) and a less-than-enthusiastic account of his travels in France and Italy. He died in the latter country.
