John Blackadder

1615 - 1686

Covenanter. Minister of Troqueer by Dumfries (1652), Blackadder was forced out following the restoration of King Charles II because he opposed the Episcopal system which was being enforced, where bishops and the King held power in the church, rather than the Presbyterian system, which involved much greater democracy. Blackadder preached at coventicles around the country, but was forced to flee to Holland in 1674. Shortly after his return (1679) he was arrested and imprisoned on the Bass Rock (East Lothian) where he died.
