Sir Alexander (Alex) Ferguson


1941 -

Football manager. Born and educated in Govan (Glasgow), Ferguson became an apprentice tool-maker and joined Queens Park Rangers (1957) as an amateur. By 1964 he had turned professional and played for Dunfermline Athletic (1964-7), Glasgow Rangers (1967-9), Falkirk (1969-73) and Ayr United (1973-4). His first managerial position was with St. Mirren (1974-8) before he joined Aberdeen (1978) guiding them to the Scottish Championship. Following a brief spell managing the national team, he joined the English club Manchester United in 1986, leading them to national and international success.

Ferguson was awarded an OBE (1984), a CBE (1995) and was knighted in 1999. St. Andrews University honoured Ferguson with an honorary degree in 2002 in recognition of his sporting achievements and charitable works.

Ferguson retired in 2013 after 26 years, the longest serving and most successful Manchester United manager, exceeding even that of his predecessor, Sir Matt Busby (1909-94).
