Lady Francis Balfour

1858 - 1931

Suffragette and biographer. Although born in London, as the daughter of George Campbell (1823 - 1900), the 8th Duke of Argyll, Lady Francis spent her formative years at Inveraray and Rosneath Castles. She worked for the emancipation of women, although was not on the radical wing of the movement, in fact Lady Francis disapproved of the activities of Emily Pankhurst. She was a capable orator and spoke out on issues of the day. She married Eustace Balfour, the brother of Prime Minister Arthur Balfour (1848 - 1930). She also worked for the reunion of the Church of Scotland with the United Free Church, which took place in 1929. Lady Francis was a noted biographer of, for example, Dr Elsie Inglis (1864 - 1917), published in 1918.
